Default TRANSMISSION HELP! 2005 Silverado 3500 6.0L Auto 4x4 CrewCab

This is my first post on this forum, so please bear with me!

I just received confirmation from my dealer that my 05 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 6.0L 4x4 Automatic Transmission is toast. Model 4L80E

The truck has a total of 240,000kms, I picked it up used a couple of years ago with not a lot of history.

I put less than 5,000kms on it per year. Just summer months to and from lake approx 3kms each way.

So I don't want to go to the expense of re-built or new... but I found a couple of low kms used ones.

My choices are:

2007 (classic body) - 16,000kms - wrecker says it will work, cross reference says it will fit etc. Warranty for 100 days. (My dealer said the wiring harness is different)

2005 - 18,500kms - same wrecker, same price, same warranty...

I would like to go with the 2007... but can anyone here confirm that the wiring would be any different or not...

Your help is appreciated. Thank you!

The Allison 1000 transmission comes in a 5 spd and 6 spd version In 2005 Allison developed the 6spd which was introduced to the 2006. Some later 2005 models may have the 6spd.

- 2001 to 2005 : 520 lb-ft
- 2005 : 565 lb-ft
- 2006 to 2007: 650 lb-ft
- 2008 to 2009: 660 lb-ft
- 2010 to present: 750 lb-ft

It looks like you actually have more choices than you described.
1. rebuild your existing trans
2. inspect the wiring harness yourself to see if it is acutally different
3. go with the 05 tranny that you know is a direct match.

I would say all of these options also have a cost factor to consider.
if the 07 that you are leaning towards has a wiring harness that matches your 05 I would say OK, if not I would be cautious as this may bring you some grief later on.
You might also consider pressing the jk dealer that if it does not work in your truck you can bring it back and exchange it for the 05.
That's a lot of work and hassle.
I would push for a better price and warrenty on the 05 which is a direct match and call it a day.

let us know how it works out

I like JVP's way of thinking. While your rebuilding your current transmission it would be a great opportunity to ad a Stage 5 kit

Latest Update... crazy saga... but all is good for me!

My friend is the service manager at the local GM Dealership. So he knows I am cheap and don't like paying for excessive repairs, and will do without a vehicle if I have to. Keep in mind I have a few other vehicles that I drive, so that is why I don't put much mileage on my vehicles.

So the Auto Recycler had a couple of transmissions to choose from. They are a very reputable shop with very clean parts. They had an 05 with 18,500kms and an 07 with 16,000kms. Both were the same price $1295... but they sold it to me for 20% off.

My truck was still at the dealership parked out back where the transmission was suppose to be shipped to and thrown in the box until I could find someone to install it cheap.

Dealership and other shops quoted 7.5hrs at @ $85-$110 per hour and some other parts like filter etc.

So I was looking at minimum $1000 after tax.

I had a friend who said he could do it for $500 cash, which I was leaning towards.

But when the shipping company showed up at the parts delivery door with this used transmission, they were confused as to what was going on. My friend who is the service manager called me and asked what I wanted to do... I asked what would be the lowest they could install it for me for... he said how does $450 sound... I said go ahead! WOW... a dealership willing to work with the customer... They have been so good to me!!! I have my Honda serviced there too. Always been great!

So long story short, my truck is back on the road!

Side note... the parts department is very unimpressed with the recycler selling direct to me at a lower price, but they will work out their differences I hope.

My friend at the dealership said he was very impressed with the part. It was labeled, tagged, and super clean.

I asked if I should bring it back in after a few kms to get everything flushed again, he said no worries, the part was flushed extensively and could tell from how clean the fluid was.

Cross your fingers... I hope I never have transmissions issues ever again... or I maybe Toyota or Nissan will come out with 3/4 or 1ton long boxes one day!

I am younger than 40... and owned more than 50+ vehicles. I prefer imports.

I have had 6 repairs of over $1000... all on my lowest km vehicles. Jeep Cherokee ABS system, Dodge Caravan starter/electrical, Ford Bronco II heads/cooling, Ford F150 transmission, GMC Sierra 2500hd transfer case, Chev Silverado 3500 transmission....

Knock on wood... no major repairs on the Honda, Porsche, or Nissan.

I hope this is the end for a long time, can't afford vehicle repairs!!!

Thanks for all of your help.

Now my mom's car just had check engine light come on... so I am thinking of going to pick up a OBD2 reader.
