5.7 V8 vs. 5.3 V8
alright my friend and i are having an arguement. he used to own a 1999 5.7 lt v8 Z71 (old body style) stock he has sincebought a dodge with the hemi (tratior, JK )
anyways thearguement is he believesthat his old stock 99 with 3.73 gears and the 5.7 will smoke my 06 with 3.42 gears andthe 5.3 (stock). now i disagree, i think the 350 was a strong motor and yes i hate my factory 3.42 gears but i still think the 5.3 would take it. both are Z71's
what do you guys think????

The specs clearly state the benefits of the 5.3 over the 5.7, but you have to look beyond the numbers to get a proper read. Sure, the 5.3 is rated at 285HP, but you have to rape the thing up to 5200rpm before that happens. Besides, look at the torque curve side by side. 5.7 = 330Ft/lbs @ 2800rpm vs 325ft/lbs @4000rpm with the 5.3.
I also believe that the older body style trucks were a smidge lighter (I have no basis of fact to back up these claims, I just open my mouth and crap falls out), so that ought to help (or hurt)the argument even more.
I'm not going to get into the gearing differences, simply because my knowledge of such things is something short of complete. In fact, my ignorance is profound and overwhelming, so that should be enough for you to disassociate yourself from me.

RE: 5.7 V8 vs. 5.3 V8
well my truck is 295hp @ 5200 and 335lb trq @ 4000rpm. so part of my "concession" to him was that maybe offthe line he would take me but once we get going the 5.3 is going to be the winner.
we kind of agreed about an hour ago that it doesnt matter, since his hemi annihalted me anyways, but it is still a good question to be asked

You got an 06, you can do a "dual zone" tune! Look online for them they are freaking sweet. You can run either 89 or 93 and your PCM will make the adjustments needed to run whatever octane you put in. Just don't mix the fuels and your fine. I think it is "JustInTime Tunes" or something like that.

RE: 5.7 V8 vs. 5.3 V8
IMHO the 5.3s are stronger. Ive owned 3 diff trucks with the 5.7 and none were near as quick as my 2000 with the 5.3. All of my older ones were 2 wheel drive and Im pretty sure my Z71 would kick all of thier asses! Oh and Major, it may take higher rpm to reach peak power on the 5.3s but my 5.3 hits higher rpms extremely faster than any of the previous 5.7s ive owned ever thought about!

RE: 5.7 V8 vs. 5.3 V8
My uncle had a 92 Ext Cab, 4x4, 5.7 with 3.73 gears and I could spank that truck so easily in mine even without the tune. My co-worker has a bone stock 98 5.7 and just from driving his truck once I could tell that mine was lighter and slightly quicker. I mean not only did mine have the raod manners of a lighter truck but my sheetmetal is considerably thinner than his so its gotta be lighter.
The 5.7 does pull easier then the 5.3, but once the TQM is toned down you can't even tell.

Bad,
The easiest way to tell the difference in the engines.
coolant will be running out of the back of the right bank of cylinders on the 350.
You can hear the piston slap on the 5.3 and not even have to open hood to look at motor.
Be safe,
drivem like your sainted grandmother would, save gas so there will be some for me.
