It could be you fuel level sensor in the tank is bad or a bad connection in the circuit. Have it scanned to see if you get a P0462 or P0463 code.

I had this problem and replaced the sensor and wire harness. Works fine now.

Fuel sending unit. Its part of the fuel harness in the gas tank. Cheap part but labor is expensive. If done by yourself its pretty easy to unbolt the bed and move it back about 2 feet instead of dropping the gas tank.

dropping the tank is not that hard, takes about an hour taking your sweet time with a buddy, hardest part is taking the rubber hose off the neck of the filler cap, and tightning the fuel pump back in the tank... the whole fuel pump assembly is about 250 for a ac delco. if you do it your self, to make it easy on your self run your truck till your damn near empty if not empty, and replace the fuel filter also.

If you have a buddy, 6 bolts out, scoot the bed back, 20 mins.... done!

i thought i'd try the "scoot the bed back 2 feet" ... how about tail light wiring and the fuel filler tube?

The tail light wiring simply unplugs from the bed (there's two). They are on the underside near the tailgate. Don't forget to reconnect them when you move the bed back.

I believe there's two or three screws connecting the filler neck to the bed at the filler port. Just remove those and bend the hose out of the way. There is also a grounding strap at the filler port as well. Make sure it's disconnected from the bed too.

I preferred moving the truck bed to access the tank. You can do this with a full tank of gas. Dropping the tank requires emptying it somehow.

I beleive you have to change out teh whole pump which has the fuel sensor level attached. Or can you just replace the sensor?

I was able to replace the fuel level sensor on the fuel pump unit it's attached to. I believe I got it from Rock Auto.
