Default fix for GM trucks power folding mirrors

Hey all,

Ive been reading the forums quite sometime as Ive been having issues with my power folding mirrors sporadically folding.

The company that also repairs the faulty door locks now apparently makes new folding mirror gears made from brass instead of plastic, and new motors for them as well. I spoke to them today, they also repair the units and offer cores if you dont want the hassle of installing the replacement brass gear yourself. I'll provide the link, but not sure if thats allowed. If the link gets removed, just google gruvenparts brass mirror gear.

http://www.gruvenparts.com/gruvenpar...rror-assembly/

And dont feel bad about how much GM charges people for new mirror assemblies. The exact same mirror fold unit is also used by Lamborghini (with similar pathetic results). Lambo charges $5400 for the mirror tho !

We warranty all units for 1 year, but if there are ever any issues with the product we ask you to contact us immediately even if outside the warranty period. Please read the repair options below before ordering.

Repair Options
Buy Motor Only and Install Yourself - Save $$. Click the product image above to visit the product page and read the motor only install procedure.

Buy a Repaired Actuator : Our FAA licensed Airframe and Powerplant mechanics disassemble the broken actuators, clean and lubricate the core components, and replace the unreliable GM electric motor within the unit with our new high torque design with the factory correct wiring input. Core Charge
There is a $20 core charge when ordering the actuator from us which is refunded when you send us your old actuator in serviceable condition (ie, not ripped apart, burned, run over, ect...). Please send your old actuator to the address listed on the product page to receive the $20 core refund. Please include a copy of your original order invoice and write ""CORE"" on the package. There is no core on the ""Motor Only"" option.

By Back Program
Do you have a dead actuator lying around the garage? Are you a GM service tech or independent shop that has buckets of these things collecting dust or filling up your waste bins? You may be able to send them to us for a $10 credit or check and help out other GM owners. We are actively building our Cores inventory and need your serviceable actuators. If they are serviceable, we'll issue you a $10 credit or check (your choice). Please email Paul@GruvenParts.com with your part number(s).

Forgive me, but I read your post three times in a row and can't seem to find a question ... I read your post some time ago and quite frankly thought it was possibly spam.

Nevertheless, if your mirror is physically in good shape and the glass moves appropriately, I do not see an issue installing new parts into the mirror to fix the folding concern. To be completely honest though, my diver's mirror has been hit before and one of the little tension springs inside that holds the mirror tight against its pivot is broken and the glass does weird stuff when you adjust it. So in my case if it stopped folding I would just replace it.

So ... hope that helps

Sorry, I was at that time wondering if people had gone thru this install procedure before, using the GruvenParts upgraded items, and what their success ratio was. I was concerned about my abilities to even be able to do this. I since tackled this, and it was no big deal, but Im wondering if others have been doing this repair also. It can be tricky if you arent mechanically inclined (like myself!)

Regarding your "broken spring" - what part did you break ? There is only 1 main spring in the unit and its very very strong, I doubt that is broken. You would have to cut it with a torch to break it, LOL. However, when the plastic spur gear broke, then it wouldnt hold the mirror unit in place very well anymore and the whole thing wobbled going down the street. It was all related to the spur gear broken.

The mirrors should bolt up just fine. I'm not 100% sure on the wiring though. It should be simple enough to cobble something together for turn signal indicators and or power mirrors. Seems to me most tow mirrors are manual adjustments anyways.

Starting in 2014, GM released power folding tow mirrors, however they are manual telescope. These mirrors also contain plastic gears and crappy motors though, so we should expect same issues as the non-tow power fold mechanism breaking.
