Default Transmission Issue

First of all i have a 04' silverado 1500 with 120000 mi. i've put about 30,000 of them on myself. So to todayi was driving home and desided to take gravel because its about 5 miles shorter. I came off the tar and hit the gravel and it was just graded and got an inch of rain on it. Equals worse than mudd. so i went through that for a mile and it pulled really hard. but anyways once i got through iti slowed down to cross a road and the transmission was slipping bad. like it was in neutral. so i stopped for about 30 seconds. took off again and it was just find. no slipping at all, shifts just fine. so i smelled the fluid and it smells almost dry like. my dad is a mechanic and he said if it smells alot, its not good. so im gonna get the fluid changed, not flushed. just wondering what fluid to have them use? kinda along story for a simple question.

Could it have been the fluid level? Positive it was full? Just use Dex/Mercon Fluid. Steer away from synthetic.

yeah it was full. i checked it on a shop floor(level) and it was right in the middle. and it does have the tow package with tranny cooler. i probably should of just dropped it in 2ndthe whole time, i did towards the end.

If you left it in 2nd when you started off from a dead stop, and you didn't punch it or anything, it probably tried starting in second. Mine does that when I put it in 2nd.

i had it in drive when i started. and yes i am a believer in lucas oils. i think im going to get the trans oiled changed and then add some lucas and call her good. its just fine now. doesn't slip when shifting, never has. i've got on it a couple times to see if it would slip but nothing. just must of been hot and the ****ty fluid. this summer i pulled a 28' camper 180 miles in third with no problems. i am looking into the SS gauges so i can get the white back plate and tranny temp. would be nice to have and the white is ****.

I think the PCM has a brain fart occasionally and causes a slip or missed shift. Just a theory.
