Default Need a 5.7L V8 for my 98' 1500

I have just decided to put a new motor in my truck, (I hope to). I have a 1998 silverado 1500 fleetside 2wd with the 307 in it. It has a rod knock and a want to put a 350 (5.7) in it. Does anyone have any leads on where to get one. Also if you are selling yours or know someone who is, PLEASE let me know. I need to drive it as soon as possible!! Thanks!

gm performance parts, junkyard, or just check with a local mechanic. there's a mechanic around here that goes to junkyards, gets engines, and rebuilds them for less than a crate engine would cost

The crate engines are expensive, but put out more power and have better warantee from what I have seen.

crate engines are definitely a safer bet, rebuilt engines are only as good as the parts used and the person that rebuilds it. crate engines are for the most part built by reputable companies like edelbrock and general motors, not your local cooter.

like stated about crate versus rebuilt as far as what you have in it now its probably a 305 not a 307. and for a larger motor youll need to change a few more things than just the motor.

I would look at Craigs list, basically a local search for used stuff, I have found that people are less likely to rip you off if you can seethem face to face (unlike ebay). Also may want to check out CKS crate engines, decent warrenty and they are pretty reasonably priced! But then you may need to go to the junk yard to find all the EFI stuff and then get a wiring kit to complete the setup. You will probably be down for a week or so, if you can only work on it at night. Basically ifI were you I would get a direct replacement 305 for your truck. This will get rid of a lot of guess work. If you have a good running 305 and a few performance parts (ie intake and exauhst) you will not be dissapointed. Then when you go to sell the truck or trade it in, people will be less worried about the install. Just a thought.

it is really easy to find a 350. they are all over the placebecause they are very reliable engines and chevy put them in almost everything. a crate engine is going to run you about 3-4 grand but it does come with almost everything you need to get it running quickly a rebuilt one will run about 1500-2000 depending on who is doingit and what you are usingalso they come witha warranty mostof the time. at least that is what i found out when i built my engine. it was jsut cheaper for me to do it.

You can get a crate engine without the intake, manifolds, wiring and accessories for about $2,000 to $2,500. The 305 (your engine) uses the same intake, manifolds, and other stuff as the 350 so its pretty easy to swap them out. You can even get it without the heads and save a little more but Im sure the 305 heads don't flow as much (but I could be wrong). As long as you get the correct block, everything will bolt right up and work well with the 305 stuff.

I have a 300 hp 350 sitting under my hood now. If anyone would like to see it run, swing by my Youtube channel and check it out. My page is: www.youtube.com/Vette31991. Feel free to browse any videos I have posted, and many are quite random.
