truck grinds when i try to put it into 4 low

Default truck grinds when i try to put it into 4 low

i have a 1998 chevy silverado, with push button 4 wheel drive and my truck will go into 4 hi fine without any problems but when i try to put it in 4 low it wont go in and it just grinds terrible. i have to put it back in 4 high so it will stop grinding. when i try to put it into 4 low i d o have it in neutral. any ideas what is wrong with my truck. thanks

Ideally, you should be in neutral with the Parking brake set. I have the floor shifter on the same model truck and it has to be in neutral or it won't move. When it does move, I have to keep it at a steady slow pace while moving it otherwise it will grind

if i have my truck in neutral and then put it in 4 low it goes in, but when i put it in gear, it starts grinding terrible.

Chevrolet was always weird about their 4x4. You need to put it in neutral in order to put it in 4x4, its the way the t case is built
