Considering how I just added this forum to the website, I figured I would go ahead and share my experiences with various diesel engines:

2000 GMC Sierra 2500HD Work Truck Duramax:
I drove this truck when I worked at a tool and die shop. They drove the crap out of it. at 15k miles it got a new powertrain under warranty because they blew up. The box was replaced multiple times and everything that could break, was broken. We bought it for next to nothing with 336,000 on it, sold it with 350,000 to our farrier, and I believe he is creeping up on 450,000 miles now, after putting an Allison in it. What an engine.

2004 F250 6.0 Ext cab Lariat:
I bought this truck in Phoenix for a great price and drove it all the way back to Michigan. After it was here for two months the high pressure oil pump and branch tube went out at an estimated $4400 repair. I sold it broken to a mechanic. Never again. The 6.0 and 6.4 are miserable.

2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab 6.6 Duramax:
This truck was great and was used by my mother to pull a horse trailer. Ran it to 100,000 and the purchase of a bigger trailer combined with a little jittery steering meant it was time to trade it in.

2011 Ford F350 Lariat Crew Cab Fx4 SRW: This truck was great for pulling the gooseneck horse trailer and the prices were great in the fall of 2011. We were a little nervous pulling the plug on another ford, but the results were in, and the new 6.7 Powerstroke is the real deal. This was driven to 90k miles and only had come ECM issues throwing faulty O2 sensor codes.

2015 Ford F350 King Rance Crew Cab Dually: It's a beast. The 2015 refresh of the 6.7 makes a ton of difference, and this dually jumps off the line. It wasn't time to trade in the old one, but $10k over KBB on the 2011 will tend to convince you. Only 6000 miles on her now, but as I speak my mother is hauling 3 horses across the country.


Anyways, these are my personal up-close experiences with Diesel engines... I love diesel, and I'm trying to get my girlfriend to buy a new cruze diesel lol.

 

In 1969 I purchased a new Chevy C20 Camper Special with a 350 ci 4.10 rear end, 950x16.5 tires. Since rebuilding the 350 THREE times, and in 1977, I decided to replace the 350 with a Perkins straight 6 354 ci non turbo with a 4 speed manual tranny and added a two speed aux overdrive. In 2011, replaced the first Perkins with another 6-354 Perkins with a turbo, bored to 388 ci, aluminum billet roller rocker arms, racing pistons, Fuller 10 speed pneumatic tranny. Had to make and install a 2" lift kit to clear the Fuller tranny. Made two 34 gal aux fuel tanks that are installed fwd of the bed's fender wells. Total gals carried is 88 gals. Added a 15 gal compressed air tank that is filled via the Perkins' air compressor that also furnished air to an 36" truck air horn. Refurbished the inside and outside of the truck. Removed the bench seat and replaced it with Chrys. convertible leather power bucket seats. Painted with six coats of the same factory burgundy color paint. Added aluminum 16"x9" rims for the ATA 33" Goodrich tires. Interior was repainted, new windshield Future plan is to install an overdrive gear to the Fuller Tranny. Currently running 55 mph @2100 rpm. New overdrive gears will give me 70 mph at 1900 rpm.
