Default 1991 sierra 3500 battery problem

I cant get any juice to my truck. I had to replace the battery and now i must not be hooking it up right because theres no power whatso ever going to my truck. the gauges, lights, etc... dont come on. i have two negative cords that have rubber side mount posts but the screw that was used for the other battery is only capable of taking on negative cord. So what goes where and where does this other cord go? ones coming from the engine block and the other from the starter or cylanoid. now i have took sandpaper and removed the corrosion and i have taken jumper cables to the truck after hooking it up and theres no power to it either while and after doing that. so like i said i must not be hooking it up right.
any help would be awesome.
thanks in advance
