Default Are door lock remotes expensive?

I lost my spare key and remote for my 2008 F-150. I've heard they're expensive to replace? Can I by a generic one and program it myself?

I got the remote, only a couple bucks on eBay. Now I have to replace the key, that's going to be the costly part I hear.

Local lock smith cutting a new key would be cheapest i think.
Better than replacing all the lock cylinders AND the ignition lol.

True, but the trouble is, said key has a chip and only the dealer can re-program it.
