My 02 Silverado did it. The dealership "fixed" it and didn't have any issue with it for the next 100k miles. I've now got an 02 Sierra SLE that does it. I may try wolfpacks approach to get it fixed if they don't do it free of charge.

I had the dealership replace the shaft with the new part while my truck was still under warrenty. This was about 4 months ago. So far so good.

These sites are invaluable. I was having this exact problem on my 2005 Silverado and found this thread. I emailed my service advisor with the bulletin and part number information and he said they'd take care of it even though I was 4 months out of warranty. Thanks to everyone for the great info and I hope the people that were having problems got squared away.

ORIGINAL: Argon a gm service advisor is just now finding out about this??? No. Sorry if I was unclear. I was researching the possible problem/solution before I ever contacted the service advisor. I'm sure he would've known about it, I was just trying to get ideas on potential fixes/costs since I was out of warranty.

so i just bought a 03 sierra 5.3L. Nice truck, but im starting to get that column knock. I read in here that GM has extended the warranty on trucks for this problem to 100k miles. Im under that right now. Can someone like me who doesnt have any type of warranty from a dealer get this fixed for free or very cheap. I like the truck, just this knock is annoying.

I'm glad to see someone got satisfaction. I took my 05 Sierra to the GMC dealership in Dec.06 for the same problem. I was told that there wasn't a permanant fix at that time, so they lubed it. The clunking in the shaft went away, but the service rep. told me it would come back. Well, they were right. It came back. I brought it back in about a month ago, and they replaced the intemediate steering column shaft. I was charged 240.00, because the warranty had expired. I think it was wrong to make me pay for a factory defect. I tried arguing my point, to no avail. I think I'm going to send letters to the BBB, and GM customer service. Who knows, I just might get a refund too.
