ABS coming on
Hi,
I have an '02 Avalanche 2500 4WD Auto 8.1L. It has recently started bringing on the ABS when I am coming to a halt, even braking gently on a dry road. Any suggestions? |
It was a bitch to diagnose this on my 98... it ended up being the electronic brake control module... which isn't a cheap part to fix.

Hey I have a 02 1500 avalanche and there was a recall on the wheel speed sensors. I found out by the dealer when I took it in to get an alignment done about 6 months ago, and just this week my ABS light came on again and it’s the left front hub bearing that has gone bad. Hope this helps.

Got the problem sorted now.
It's actually dead easy and costs nothing! The wheel speed sensor is a plastic molding that pokes into the hub bearing just behind the brake rotor. It is secured by one small bolt at one side. The problem is that the cast iron of the hub rusts and forces the other end of the molding upwards. This takes the sensor too far from the sensor ring inside the hub. Just undo the bolt, pull the sensor out with a pair of pliers and clean up the hub surface underneath the sensor with a small chisel til you get back to the original hub surface. Grease the hub surface and pop the sensor back in. Sorted!:) |

Glad you were able to fix it for free.
I have not had the luck to fix them that way. Has always ended in a new hub/bearing assembly. When the hubs get a little loose it allows the tone ring to move away from the sensor. |
