newbie - Brake plate
 

hello,
I am the proud owner of a 02 NEWFACE ava.

It's nice.

This thing is SWEET. I never knew how nice a truck could be.

Had a shop go through it and they said the rear brake plate was rusted.

Now, forgive me of my lack of knowledge, but after looking around I see that this is a thin piece of metal that stops gunk from getting into he brakes.

Thoughts? How bad is this? How hard to replace?


Upside: I ran into a friend of mine who has one just like it, with only ur, 328000 miles on it. Yeah, that's right.

If your handy at doing your own services.... It's not a big job.
I did the backing plate on my 87 Chev 4x4 a few weeks ago. The brakes had to be removed. Fluid drained from differential. Removed axle then backing plate was removed.
Patched, repaired and painted then reinstalled.

Is it full floating axle or semi floating. There are different instructions.

Full floating axles would normally be seen on a big truck ie: transports drive axles or even on a 1 ton or 3/4 truck. They are easily identified by the center hub with bolt to detach the axle without having to take the wheel off.

Semi floating axles can only be removed by taking the diff cover off and draining it to remove the axle retaining rings.

So yes, you will need to drain your rear diff to remove your axle then remove your backing plate
