Default '00 Z71 Gas Gauge

Hello all, hoping you can help me here. Recently purchased a '00 z71 1500. I disconnected the battery (-) terminal for about 10 minutes. Now, may gas gauge is not working at all. In fact the gauge bottoms out well under the "full" symbol. Any idea what the problem may be? It was working fine before I disconnected the terminal. Fuse/Relay possibly?? Thanks all.

Motor that controls the needle is probably dead. Mine is acting up. You can buy them on ebay but I bet they are a b*tch to replace.

Yeah, I don't think that you can even replace them because they are in the instrument cluster. I am pretty sure that it is illegal to crack that open.

I have the same truck, and ive asked many people and i usually hear the same thing. Its the sending unit inside of the fuel tank, and its not something cheap to replace, somewhere in the area of $600-$800 to re-do it all and have it work right.

I had the same thing happen on my work truck 02 2500hd and I was quoted $800 to fix it, I just reset my trip odometer and ran 300 miles and then filled it, it had about a 35 gallon tank and I got about 11 mpg. Much cheaper than getting it fixed.

my GM guy told me that most 2000 silverado trucks have this problem. GM has a fix for this, but you have to get to the tank to fix it. This means $. Mine bounces around everywhere, except when its in neutral or park. My advice is to keep track of your mileage. Leave it alone.
