02 silverado - duel exhaust - good idea??

Whats up?

I have a 2002 5.3 Silverado Z71. I’m looking to run True Duels 3” Cat back, Flowmaster 44’s with 4”X24” tips straight out. I have been told by more than one muffler shop that that is not a good idea. They said they pressure of the second sensor will be off and they have had trucks coming back with problems such as, bad idling, lower gas mileage.

I REALLY want to run true duel opposed to Y, but not if it is going to screw my truck up!

-------> Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences?

Please let me know Thanks a lot!!!!!

I have 03 Silverado Z71 it has flowmaster catback with the exhaust coming out the side and k&n mass air ,just replaced o2 sensor after the cat on the passenger side today and it has a slight rough idle.(65,000 miles).

You aren't making enough power to run a dual 3" exhaust.

Why do you want a true dual setup?

Thanks for the comment

I want to run True Duel because it sounds better than Y and its real, not like an imitation (hence “True” Duel). I want to run the best, money is not a problem if I’m getting good results. Are you suggesting the tone/sound comes more from the tips rather than the pipes?

It might (or might not) sound better but you're going to lose performance going that big. You can go duals but I would keep it to a smaller pipe and just put big tips (which will give you the grumble i think you're wanting) on. A buddy of mine just dumped his by the back axle and had a 5" tip on it...actually sounded really good.

So do you think it would be safer to run 2.5’s back thru mufflers to 4” tips?

DamnYankee 06-03-2009 03:06 PM

I would probably run 2".

is that still going to give me the deep sound im looking for?

I think as long as you have some tips on there and a decent muffler youll get what you're looking for.

Yeah I second that!! These motors are not designed to run with almost no restriction on the exhaust. Think of a garden hose with the nozzle end open and water just pouring out... put your thumb on the nozzle and it pressures up but the water moves faster. Thats a crucial squeeze point!! The bends on the stock exhaust do just that. That is where you will get the most torque, especially in the low end. Free flowing, which is what you are looking at, will only cause the computer to give bad air fuel ratio adjustments. If you want sound, then 4 inch tips with a performance muffler will be your best bet to keep your power.
