Default '06 Sierra SLE Power steering

I just purchased my first GMC Sierra about a month ago and noticed that the steering was really stiff at a stand still and during parking manuvers. I brought it to the dealership and they told me they replaced the power steering pump but when I picked the truck up the steering was just as bad. I tried to work the new pump in a little bit by turning wheels left and right while parked but that didnt make any diffrence the steering is so stiff I have to use a lot of force to turn it at all. So I droped the truck back off at the GMC dealership on Friday mourning and they are saying that they want to replace the steering gear on monday. It's a 2006 GMC Sierra SLE 4x4 Z71. Any suggestions or concerns?

I have similar stiff steering probelm with my 2002 GMC Sierra but it is only stiff when cold and turning left. I just took it and to service station and they lubed joints which did nothing. I hear this is a very common problem with these trucks, possibly a steering shaft/column problem. There is supposed to be a serice bulletin on it but I cannot find it. Anyone?

There is an updated steering shaft for these trucks. Dont think its covered under warranty but the cost for the part is about 70 bucks. Easy to install.
