1989 chevy c1500 wont start

My truck has never failed to start till now. The truck may only get 200 to 300 miles a year put on it. I tried to start it up the other day for the first time in a few weeks. It almost fired then it would just crank and crank. I have spark down to the wires. The tbi is spraying out fuel. i pulled one spark plug seems to look good and was not wet. So far i changed the distrubter cap and rotor and the ignation modal ( the part right below the cap). Also on a side note. I have a problem with leaking tranny fluild after sitting for longer periods of time..ill drive it wont leak..a month later of sitting..it dumps tranny fluild from one day to next. Thanks josh.

Sounds like your truck needs a lot of love. When it gets left for weeks on end seals and O rings will dry up and begin to crack.
Oil viscosity begins to break down and your fuel octane levels will drop.

I would suggest an oil change now, (if the engine was getting fuel but didn't start... some of that fuel may have ended up in your crank case)
Then try some fresh fuel

i did dump 8 fresh gallons in with dry gas. It would not even start with starting fluid but there is spark at the plug

Engines need 3 things to run...Spark, fuel and compression....You have 2....do a compression test

I agree with poncho62, it sure sounds like you have lost compression. I had a 1989 also and to this day the truck does not fail to start.

Good luck,

tested spark at all 8 cylinders. All checks good. I did find a spark plug that was extrememly loose i tightened it up but still no start. but i think its probably flooded from all the spark plug tested.

Update: Held pedal to floor and cranked for about 30secs. Fired right up. I believe that is the deflood mode in the truck. Ran and idle for about 5mins. Then i started to give it some throttle and it died out. Will not idle now but does run if you give it some fuel. The spark plugs are fouled. Gonna replace plugs now and hopefully the problem is solved.

How is your fuel pressure?

josh29j 07-02-2014 07:11 AM

trucks running perfectly fine now

josh29j 07-02-2014 07:42 PM

All is not well again. Drove the truck today. Ran perfect. except for it wont start unless you hold pedal to floor. i tried started it normal a few mins ago, and it fouled the plugs and wont start at all again. seems like its getting to much fuel at start up but it runs fine once it is started, and the engine temp is good everything looks good when running
