1990-1993 454ss trucks, any info please???

Is the milage much worse than the 350 small block, a good price for this truck? horsepower? All opinions on it are appreciated,

The mileage will be worse and with the ****ty heads that GM put on them they really are not all that fast. I have had a few. The 1990's do not have overdrive so their mileage is the worst, unfortunately they are the cheapest and easiest to find. When they switched to the overdrive transmissions in 1991 they also changed the rear end to a 4.10 from a 3.73 so that negates a little of the mileage increase from the overdrive, but also gives you a tad more seat of the pants feel taking off. I noticed the biggest performance difference (comparing my 1993 SS to a 5.7 truck) when you try to pass or accelerate on the interstate. The 454 trucks pull much harder than the small blocks. Now with a decent set of heads and a couple tweaks they run OK. I am a GM fan and really like the looks of the truck, but was disappointed on how GM dropped the ball with these trucks. Compared to the Ford lightening (especially the later supercharged ones) well there really isn't much of a comparison. With that said I still would love to have my 1993 original black with gray interior back. That color combination is HARD to find. Good luck!

this was a good while ago, but they did an episode of "trucks" where they took and early 90s 454ss and an early 90s lightning and each host modded one... it was pretty easy to get the 454 running sa-weet. actually i think its was just aluminum heads and an intake. they have major potential.
