Default 1997 problems please help

I have a 1997 silverado with the 5.7 vortex engine that I bought a month ago. I'm new to Chevy's always had Jeeps. I'm having this problem that started today. My check gages light is on and my speedometer and tach and the orange light that tells me what gear my transmission is out also and my transmission isn't shifting. A couple of times I shut it completly off and everything came back to normal but this afternoon everything is out and not coming back to normal. Can anyone help me with this problem or steer me in the right direction? Thanks

Could be the Vehicle Speed Sensor. When that goes out, your speedometer wont work and the transmission wont shift good. They mount on the rear of the transmission on the passenger side. One bolt holds it in. They run about 23 bucks.

Thanks, I took it over to Auto Zone and they checked the codes and it came up with a blocked passage in the transmission.
Would that speed sensor make the orange light go out too that tells you whether your in park reverse netural drive and also the tach go out?

Im not sure. If they told you that then next thing is take it to a trans shop and have them troubleshoot it. Its gonna cost about 75 bucks but its better than guessing.

how did autozone come up with a blocked passage code?????????? As far as I know that code doesnt exist. I had this happen once. I unplugged the neutral safety switch and tapped on it then plugged it back in and everything has worked since....try the neutral safety switch

AutoZone plugged something into my truck under the dash and brought it inside and plugged it into thier computer and thats when it read that there was a blocked passage in transmission. I dont believe it. My truck was back to normal last night for a while thats why i believe its an electrical problem and not a blockage. Where is the nutural switch located?

drivers side of the tranny where the shift cable hooks up...there should be 2 plugs...they can be a PITA to get unplugged sometimes and you may have to apply a little heat.

Thanks guys for the input. The truck was acting up and I got it to a transmission shop and it threw 4 codes. It was actually the ignition switch. They replaced it and its running and shifting great again.

Oh yeah! The ignition switch supplies power to the tranny. After a while the switch will build up resistance and eventually go bad. So when the tranny's electrical runs low on power, it will go into limp mode. Sometimes only allowing 2nd and 3rd gear to work.
