Red face 1997 silverado 1500 IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER

Hi everyone! Im Darrell and i just signed up. Any way, my question is.. I just bought a 97 chevy 1500 and well lets see how to put this.. lets just say someone put jb weld or something in my switch.. i cant do anything... What do i have to do to just change the whole switch.. Ive read where if I dont know the vats right resister to put on the new key to match the pcm it wont work. Then i read where the vats system wasnt used on trucks till 98.. I dont want to start something and mess up my whole wiring system.. Please help.

Thanks for the response. That eliminates that issue. So on to the next question. Now I've replaced everything in the earlier models (90-93) so is the only thing diff is the airbag? I've read where I have to turn the switch to the on position before I can remove the lock cylinder? Is this accurate? If so, what's another way?
