2000 Chevy REAR wheel bearing replacement?

Hiya Folks,

I am getting ready to do a REAR wheel bearing replacement, on my 2000 Chevy SilveradoZ71 4X4. From what I have been able to gather, the front is a hub replacement, the rear is a bearing. Can anyone provide me some info on how to? Do I need to remove the axel?

Thanks in advance for your help

Cristian

I have no clue of your mechanical knowledge/tools,but that is not an easy job...messing around inside the rear end is tricky..plus a few special tools needed.

Why? If it ain'tbroke don't fix it. Rear axle bearings don't go bad very often, unless you hammer your truck.

Well... I did kind of do some offroading that seems to have caused some damage to the bearing... So ya I kind of hammered it :)

Any info would help.

Front bearing hubs are pretty easy since they are a single unit; the rear is just he bearing which has to be pressed out of the hub and then the new bearing presed back in. For my money and time I would take it to a local shop, unless you have a press etc.

Don't worry man I feel your pain. My rear bearing is so bad oil is leaking all over the driveway from it. But the problem is that we were in the process of changing it. We got as far as taking the pin out of the rear diff. so we could take the axle out, well we found out that the screw holding the pin in, was broke in half. We cant get it out so now we got to get a new back axle. =] which is good for me, im not paying for it, lol my dad is.

I think we may be talking about two different things, my rear WHEEL bearing is bad. I would never consider trying to do anything in the rear end I am not that good! :)

YOU have to inside the rear end to release the axle,so you can slide the axle out to change the bearing.
