Question 2000 chevy silverado 4x4 question

hey guys sorry this might be a dumb question but i dont know much about automobiles. i recently purchased a 2000 chevy silverado 4x4 from my uncle. im from ohio and it obviously snows a little bit here. i was told from my uncle not to drive in 4 wheel on the road and that it was just for getting unstuck and things like that. i have been told differently from others though and im not sure what to do here. anyone willing to answer my question would be greatly appreciated! thanks.

Don't ride on dry pavement in 4x4 or you'll wear out the tires and have issues making sharp turns. If the road is white with snow, etc. then 4x4 on the road is fine.
