2002 Chevy 1500 Silverado, 5.3L

The place I just had my oil changed at put in synthetic 5w-20 and my truck is suppose to take 5w-30 according to the owners manual. It also says not to put in 5w-20. Will this damage my engine? Should I replace the 5w-20 with the correct oil?

How do you know they put in 5w-20. Did you see the cans they used or did they just write it down wrong on the sticker. If they did put in the wrong stuff take it back and make them change it for free. Your engine will be ok.

I have not called them yet as they are not open. The sticker they stuck on my truck said they installed 5w-20. I did not see what they installed and I honestly don't trust them after I went through over there. Went in for a basic overview of my truck and told them I am having cooling system issues. They told me you got a leak and we will have to do a pressure test which costs $50. Came in to pick up my truck and they were trying to bill be around $80 for the pressure test and an oil change. Told them I just changed my oil a month ago and put synthetic in. So they replaced my the standard oil they just put in with synthetic then adjusted the bill. They told me $50 over the phone and charged me $67 with tax for the pressure test.

As IBM mentioned.. I would go back and get them to change it out... And if possible, watch them do it. or make a scratch on your drain plug and check it after.
It's easy for them to just pull your truck in and then pull it out 15 min later and say is done.

No it won't damage your engine. But for longer engine life your manual says 5/30 so you should stick with 5/30

the 5 indicates the oil weight which your engine needs in cold starts
the 20 and 30 is the viscosity. The higher the second number, the thicker the oil is at higher operating temperature.

So what did they say about your coolant leak I hand a super slow leak and they replaced the intake manifold but mine is a 5.7

Personally I wouldn't worry about the oil. Just run it the standard 3K miles and change it out again like you always do. I'm not really a believer in synthetic oils for a standard duty usage, but what I don't get, is it sounds like they did this work for you without asking you first??

I mean technically if they didn't ask you before doing it, you can refuse the work and get a free oil change and pressure test??

Not sure how thing work there.... around here, you and the service department have to agree ahead of time what work is going to be done. Then you sign the work order ahead of time.
Any work done over and above without your consent, well like NullHead said it is a BONUS for you :D

Yes they did the work without asking, and I did get the oil change for free. I agreed to pay for the pressure test up front, but I was told it was $50 and they charged me $67.00. I was so angry at the time, I just paid the extra $17.00 and told them you will not see me back.

NullHead Mar 19, 2013 07:47 PM

Free oil change but maybe you paid sales tax on the oil and filter?? Maybe examine your receipt. You can't tax any labor they put into checking for the leak, but maybe there's a free or cost that they didn't explain to you that is standard procedure.

........or they just changed the price on you lol. Really though the difference is $17, so it's not a HUGE deal, but they really should not have changed the price on you.
