2002 Fuel System Issue?

I have a 2002 Silverado Z71 4x4 with about 78,000 miles. I love my truck but it has been a pain for a couple months. A couple months ago it started having issues starting. It turns over and cranks fine. However, the first time I turn the key it cranks but will not start, soI let it crank for a second or two and then hit the ignition again and it fires right up. Also, if I turn the key to on and let it sit for about 5 seconds it usually starts right up. Once it is running it runs and idles fine.
I have tried a couple simple items like changing the fuel filter and running an injector cleaner through, still the same. I do not smell fuel or see it on the ground or engine. Someone even suggested it may be a fuel rail or an injector that is stuck open and bleeding the system pressure off into the engine. Not sure what is going on but seems like maybe it is the fuel pump, but I am wanting it not to be because it looks expensive to have it doneor difficult if I do it myself, since the fuel tank has to be dropped.
Anyway, has anyone else had the same problem? If so, what was it? Or, what other items should I check/try before going the fuel pump route?
Thanks,
Troy

If you are not throwing a code it is most likely the fuel pump. There is a thread on this site called "cranks but wont start" or trouble starting", I'm not sure of the heading. Some poeple will disagree, but, I think it is easier to remove the bed to change the fuel pump.

Thanks Cracker. Is there an easy way to check for codes. I do not have the device. Can I take it to a parts store or dealer and have them check for me? How much woould that cost? If it is the pump, how much can I expect to pay in parts?

Thanks,

Troy

Also, how involved is removing the bed. Anyone posted directions on here for that? All the repair manuals I have seen show the tank drop method.

Thanks,

Troy

It is most likely a pump...But the only way to know for SURE is to pressure check it.

A word for the wise...DO NOT put a cheap pump in....others here will verify...its just too critical and too costly to go pump-thrifty shopping..

I can tell you a gm pump INSTALLED is about 675...pump only around 450 to 5oo

I have a co worker who has a brand new Malibu and it does the same exact thing at only 20K miles.

I took my bed off, and i think that is definitely the way to go, its only like 8 bolts that are way easy to get to

Well, looks like I need to get a fuel pressure check done and if that is is the problem I will go the bed removal route and replace the fuel pump. Found some info on it, looks pretty straight forward:

1. remove 3 bolts inside gas filler door of the fill pipe
2. remove ground strap under bed at gas filler neck
3. disconnect wire connector at rear of bed for the tail lights.
4. remove 6 or 8 bolts from bed
5. pick up bed and remove

Thanks all for the help.

Argon,

Sorry I didn't give you credit directly for the resolution on the other thread.
