2003 1500HD Transfer Case Replacement/Rebuild
I'm looking for a reputable online company who can sell a Transfer Case to me.
I have found a few but I'm not sure which "option" I have. What does SS mean regarding this T-Case? I have a 2003 Silverado 1500HD LT 6.0L V8. The current transfer case has the following info on the plate: Model 246 GM ASSY NO. 12577835 Serial NO. 71702K1 Ratio 272 I have the push button 4WD selector. |

A couple of weeks ago I started hearing a ticking sound coming from underneath my truck. It was coming form the transfer case. I bought some Autotrac II fluid and prepared to change the fluid. I opened the drain plug and five drops of fluid came out--that is all that came out. It had been empty for who knows how long. I filled it and drove it. The sound went away but I noticed that I had a leak that I never noticed before. I researched and found that I had a well-known problem (pinhole due to pump rub). I patched the hole temporarily with JB Weld but it still weeps. Now I'm hearing an intermittent scraping sound. Sounds horrible for about 4 seconds, but goes away quickly. Since I cannot pinpoint the sound, I assume that the T-Case is toast after (years?) of low-to-no fluid. A rebuilt case with a warranty sounds like the best bet in this instance since there are possibly hundreds of dollars worth of parts that need to be replaced inside the T-Case. The rear housing also needs to be repaired. As for the scraping sound, I hope it goes away with the T-Case swap. I'll update the thread when I know. |
