Here's an update in case anyone is interested. The new encoder motor seems to have fixed the problem - no SERVICE 4WD warningor random shifting of the transfer case since replacing the encoder motor.

I was wondering how hard it was to replace that motor? I have an 04 and just recently started having the exact problems you were decribing.

This is an old thread but it did me some good. I read several places that the TCCM was behind the light switch. I found mine factory clipped and tie wraped fwd of a box that is behind the OBDII plug. NO dash removal required. I replaced the unit with a used one. THe jury is still out if this will fix the problem. looks good. If I have problem I will look at the next cheapest part, likly the sensor.
Have fun

just went through the same thing with my 2003 Silverado. not where it says it is in the Haynes repair manual. It is located right above the emergency brake pedal. have to get it from behind. It snaps out. tight fit with the wires and cable running past it.
