2005 GMC/HVAC Fan not running
 

Howdy! The HVAC fans do not run when turned on. Speeds 4&5 stopped working several weeks ago, now speeds 1-3 do not work. Took apart harness connectors, have burned contacts (& melted plastic housings) at the connector (with A through G contacts) that goes to the (resistor?) unit near the fans, screwed to the blower housing. All fuses checked out ok. Cleaned contacts male and female at the melted housing, replugged and still no fans working.
Any suggestions I might try before I take it in to the shop?

There is a service bulletin on this. Go to your dealer and tell them what you have. They should sell you a new resistor and an upgraded harness with plug. The harness comes with butt connectors and is a very easy install. Cut out the old harness (the same length as the new one), connect the wires, install new resistor, and plug it in. Then you are all set. The factory plug has been proven to be faulty. I think if you have under 75,000 miles it might be covered under a recall - not sure though. Good Luck!

Thanks for the info, I actually found the same info from another site, and you were right on! Bought a resistor and harness connector kit from GMC (showed them the aftermarket kit for $71 bucks and they discounted their fix-it kit from $170 to $120 but exchangable if the resistor shorts out due to worn fan motor). Our local dealer had the kit in stock, bought it this am, finished installing in less than an hour, works great! Will see how long it lasts, other site suggested that if blower motor is worn, will cause resistor to blow...if so, GM dealer will allow us to return the resistor for exchange and buy a new blower fan and will replace the resistor kit. Thanks again, your site and the other saved me big bucks at the dealer, or an Electrical shop had I taken it there. Plus, my son and I gave each other a big "high-five" when it worked...priceless.

I think it is high time to take it to the local body shop. Instead of spending more money and time by doing it yourself. It is better to spend little amount in the garage and get it done.

The day you suggested the upgrade kit, I went to the dealership and showed him the aftermarket kit I downloaded from the internet. As the dealers kit was more expensive, he gave me a hefty discount and sold me the GM kit for a slightly higher price than the aftermarket kit! There is still a warranty for it, so if it fails, I can bring it back for replacement and buy a new fan motor too. Thanks for whomever suggested I take it to "the body shop"??, but by not having the dealership check it out, I probably saved a couple of hundred bucks.
