2007 Chevrolet Silverado Classic CEL

I am brand new here, and i chose this forum to ask my quesiton out of the many ive seen. There seems to be alot of helpful folks here. So thankyou for your consideration.

I have a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado Classic Work Truck, V6. Very basic truck. When i bought it i had roughly 40,000 Miles on it. I am now at 65. I bought it in november of last year. About 4 months ago my Check engine light came on. I was furious. To know that this vehicle was only a couple years old i only had it for 6 months and the CEL was on. I took it my local autozone. The tech brought his code reader out and said he wasnt able to get power to his code reader. He thought i may have a blown fuse, so i replaced the one he suggested. No luck. Someone told me that since my vehicle is equipted with an EBD II system, i need to go to a dealership to have the code read. I am not about to go to a dealership and pay money to get a code read. Recently i have got the signal "Tighten Fuel Cap" on my odometer screen. Today i will buy a new fuel cap. And hopefully that will clear the signal. Has anyone else heard of a standard code reader not being able to read a code off a 07+ GM vehicle?

Today's advanced code readers should read any OBD II compliant (96+) vehicle including CAN. I would imagine Autozone would be using one of these types of code readers. You don't need to take it to the dealer and pay to have the codes read.

You say it wouldn't power-up. On these trucks, the power to the Data Link Connector (DLC) shares the same circuit as the cig lighter. When the code reader won't power-up, it's usually the cig fuse that is blown. Was that the fuse he recommended you replace?

The "Tighten Fuel Cap" message means you have an Evaporative system (EVAP) leak. It can be that the fuel cap isn't tight or the seal is worn and needs to be replaced. But, you could have another leak in the EVAP system also. See what happens with the new cap. It might just take care of the problem like you say. If not, you'll need to dig deeper. The EVAP vent solenoids are also know to not work correctly on GM trucks.

ok guys, i replaced my cigarette lighter fuse, and had the code read. it was an evap code. P4055 i believe. i replaced my gas cap and he cleared the code, so well see if it comes back on

You're right chevy112488; not all dealerships charge to read codes. I neglected making that clear. Thanks for correcting me.

I hate taking my truck to the dealership here. Everytime I take a vehicle to them, they come back with something they want to fix and charge me for something I can fix myself. They make it sound like my car is going to explode if they don't do it.

Thankyou, i replaced the gas cap and i have now driven roughly 100 miles on it and my CEL has not came back on. I will still watch out for it, but i think i might have fixed it *knock on wood*
