4L60E sudden transmission leak?
 

Hey guys, I have a 1992 C1500 5.0L 107,000miles with a 4L60E

I've never had a transmission fluid leak, nor have I had to top it up and it's never shown weepage on the transmission anywhere.

So my truck was stolen a few weeks ago, and has now since been recovered. I was at the estimator's shop this morning and there was trans fluid leaking from the front of the tranny. Maybe 1/4 cup's worth.

If there's no signs of the tranny cracked anywhere, is it possible the seal could have broken under pressure or hard use?

Probably ran it hard joy riding shifting down gears ect.
But you do not have a 4l60e unless someone installed it.
Should have a 700r4 . 3/4 ton could get a 4l80e in 92.
Did not install 4l60e till 93.
Insurance should pay for it. Have them to rebuild it.

Front pump seal would be my guess. If it seems to leak more when it's running than when it's just sitting, then that's the culprit.

If it was a late '92 build, it's a possibility. Easy way to check: Look for a TV cable attached to the throttle body!

You know what? you're right! It is a 700r4

Yeah that'll be a 700r4 (4l60 minus the E, really). I imagine it's the input shaft/pump seal if it's leaking from the front of the trans. As long as the trans works, I imagine the seal could be replaced without a rebuild, but honestly I don't know.

Try to get the insurance to cover it.
If they don't at least it's a 2wd and easy to pull. Things I'd do if it was mine to fix is pull the pan to drain the fluid and look for clutch debri or metal particals in the bottom. Pull the trans, drain the converter, inspect converter hub for damage at bushing area, remove seal and visually inspect pump bushing. As long as the trans shifted good, TCC works and no issues in the pan go ahead and reseal and refill. While the trans is out replace the rear main seal on the engine.

PS: dont forget to replace the little o-ring on the pump shaft.
