4wd not engaging

I have a 1995 gmc sierra and the 4wd is not working. I changed the front diff actuator but it did not solve the problem. The actuator is good (tried it in a buddy's truck) the front drive shaft does spin when the transfer case is engaged (I can also hear the tranfercase gear down). I did get the tranmission rebuilt a couple of months ago and after this is when I noticed it was not working. 4x4 lights do not illuminate when I engage into 4hi or low (I have a floor shifter). I tested the wire that connects to the actuator with a voltmeter and it showed no charge. I then traced the wire to the top of the transfercase and tested both the end of the wire and also where it plugs into the transfer case...no charge shown.

did you check the 4x4 fuse

Hello,
I recently had that problem of no 4x4 also, but my problem was that switch ontop of the transfer case.

I would check that fuse like xpeder said.

But i know on the back of the engine or front of the tranny there is a ground strap...Now im not sure if it's part of that section of the wire harness but that would be my thought of your problem.

You basically checking all the connections around the transmission where somebody messed it up from takin out or putting in your transmission.

Hope this helps.

IF the front shaft is spinning with the wheels OFF the ground...your problem is in the diff not the transfer case............... sounds like a possible electrical issue that can probably be found with a scanner.......... but the fuse is a great place to start.

If you are not getting power to the 4x4 system..It doesnt matter if the wheels are off the ground and the driveshaft is spinning, BECAUSE!!!!! you are not getting any power and obviously its an electrical issue if you have no power.

And the problem is before the transfer case because he is getting no power to the transfer case.

Thanks who all replied to this thread because I found out what was wrong with my truck. The switch on top of the transfercase that the actuator wires plug into was damaged. One of the three prongs was bent and wasn't making the connection to the actuator. I pulled it out bent it back to the normal position and plugged everything back up and it worked. When they rebuilt the tranny they probably unplugged it then bent it putting everything back together. Simple fix but fustrated the hell out of me trying to figure out what was wrong. Thanks again.
