Default 4x4 issure

So today I put my truck in 4x4 to try and get out of my yard. when I put it in 4x4 my truck sort of jerked and there was a loud band. when I tryed to get back into 2wd it wouldn't come out of 4x4 and a "service 4wd" message came up on my message center. I went to a shop, turned my truck off to see if they could put a code reader on it to see whats going on, when I went back out and started my truck it was in 2wd and the service 4wd what gone.

Anyone got any ideas what would cause this

A little back story: A couple weeks back I went and rescued my friends 250 stupidduty from a snow bank. ended up getting my truck stuck in the ditch with snow half way up the doors but managed to power my way out of it, when i check my truck over nothing looked out of place but I had snow packed in everywhere.

Does this have anything to do with the issue i'm having now? i have used 4x4 since the incident with the snow with no issues.

Try it again and see what happens. You may have damaged a connector under the truck. Give it a good look over. Put the gear shifter in N and try it. It may have just been a one time thing.
