Default 4X4 wont engage

My 1998 Z71 won't engage when I try to put in to 4 wheel. About 1 month ago as I was coming off the beach in 4H I could only get it back in to 4L. Had to drive home pretty slow but when I got home it smelled like something was burning.Finaly got it back to 2H by hitting a pot hole while pushing the button on the dash. Tried again today in the snow and it won't engage at all, just clicks and bangs like it's going in but the hubs dont seem to lock. ??????

Check the upper control arms my buddies truck broke the bearing in his truck on the right side a little while back. My truck has the similar problem so I have to be rolling but not on the gas..... check the control arms that might be the problem

I have a similar problem in my 00 Z-71, but its because the push-button switch is on its way out. The 'service 4wd' light will come on, but most of the time it will work if you give it a good thrashing.

A friend of mine had the same problem and had to replace the switch. I hope this isn't the problem, one of these will set you back $120.
