Question 82 GMC 2500 Issues

So, I have the aforementioned pickup and am trying to get it running again after about a year of sitting. The reason that it was benched was that the negative battery cable got fried one day while driving home from work and it took a backseat to having a child and life in general. Awhile back I replaced the cable and it still wont run. No lights, no starter engaging, nothing registering at all on the battery gauge. Even with a new battery. It has had some aftermarket accessories installed through the various owners but none since I have become the owner. My worry is that there may be some serious electrical damage and I wanted some guidance on where to start from people who know GMC their pickups. Any suggestions on where to start digging?

I recall having a problem once with what is called a "fusible link" i think. It is just a heavy wire that acts like a fuse and will burn in two when overloaded. I had one go out once in the middle of a desert and the car was completely dead, as yours is. I found it, there were several coming off the starter, and patched around it with a wire and got us going. You may be lucky as it probably is visible but mine burned the wire without burning through the insulation and it was impossible to see. I had to feel each one until I found one that was broken. Good luck.
