96 chevy k2500 transmission

I was driving and went to shift it into reverse and it went forward. Now no matter what I put it in it only does 1st gear even in nuetral. Do I have to get a new transmission or how can I fix this?

Sounds like a shifter linkage problem.....There is a cable from the steering column down to the trans, I believe...might have broke
