'97 Z71 1500 Exhaust

I have a '97 z71 (135k). The exhaust sounds horrible, especially when its not warmed up, I don't know if this is from the tips because they are rusted through bad as hell or the muffler being clogged, is a new muffler a good option? I want something that sounds good but is affordable. When they do a muffler swap, do they just cut out the old and weld a new one in? Also, any cheap (free) upgrades/power mods?

Thanks

do you have stock exhaust? not having tips does make its sound pretty crappy, but its hard to tell without hearing it whether its the muffler or the tips making it sound bad.

as far as cheap performance, look up the ultimate free hp mod list thread in this forum. lots of good stuff in there. also look into a throttle body spacer.

It's stock exhaust, two pipes from the engine into the muffler, 2 coming out. The tips look like they have been hit with some buckshot a couple of times, about a 3" x .5" gash on the one tip

maybe a tweaker cut your cat off. if not maybe your exhaust is just rusted out. or you may have a flowmaster and you are to old to appreciate the sound. JK sorry

Does a new muffler just get welded in? If so, what is a good sounding muffler for a reasonable price, say $200 (if that is even possible??)?

Thanks Again!

Well im sure you could get into a flowmaster with a new tip for under 200. I had one put a my old jeep a few years ago. All the guy did was put the muffler in on the stock pipe and replaced the tip with a stainless one and if i remember right it was just under 200. I also had him install a few other parts non exhaust related so there was a little money figured in for that stuff.

And yes the muffler usually is welded on but there are also exhaust clips that could be used to hold it in place. All the mufflers that i have had done have been welded on.

yeah i'd get a flowmaster 40 or 44, and you could probably even get him to run dual tips for around 200... and all the mufflers i've seen have been welded on.

If they just weld on new mufflers, I'm just going to do ti myself then. Thanks for the help!

Does anybody know where to get duel in to duel out mufflers for a 97 k1500 with VIN R? There is a Flowmaster on there now, and everything online is for different VINs

Never mind that last post, found one on Jegs, says it will fit my truck, mentions it specifically, so I'm guessing the other websites forgot about my VIN
