99 Sierra with a clunk in the transfer case.

I have a 99 Sierra 4x4 and when i put it in reverse it clunks like the rear end is gonna fall out. I checked it with a friend and it feels like it's in the transfer case. Had the u-joints fixed and thats not the prob. Truck has 150000 miles on it. Maybe worn inside? Help please!

I had a clunk in mine fom the day I pulled it off the lot. Service said it was normal. Mine isa 2000 4X4. Finally I put a nickel plated slip yoke in it last spring and the problem is gone. Make sure if you change it, you use the "blue" transfer case fluid. It's called Auto-Trak II GM Part #12378508

RE: 99 Sierra with a clunk in the transfer case.

I took it to a tranny dealer and he told me them same thing. Thathe had a truck in there with 100000kms on it and it was doing it. They tore it apart and found nothing. He told me it's "the chevy clunk". I've heard that more times than not. How much was the yoke? Alot? As to the severity of the clunk it sounds like a bad u-joint but i know its not that. I changed the fluid in the transfer case and it was the "blue" fluid from a GM Dealer. Runs a little better but the clunk is still there. Anyway he told me to drive it. But I am being careful with it for sure.
