99 silverado driveshaft

I have a question regarding the infamous driveshaft problem on the 99 silverados. Mine has ~145k miles on it, and Im the 3rd owner it is doing the squeaking/clunking sound when i stop, and then again when I go. Did I read correctly that GM will take care of this problem, and if not how much is that going to set me back? Also, There is like a metal clunking sound when I shift from Park to drive, but other than that it shifts fine. Is this related to the driveshaft problem? Thanks for all your help.

I dont know anything about the squeeking or clunking when u stop, but the clunking from park to drive could be a bad u-joint or play in the rear end due to high milage wear.

I don't know much about the driveshaft problems wih 99's, but you first need to narrow where problem is. Ex: rear end, drive shaft, tranny, transfer case. Try by hand rotating the driveshaft while looking at the u-joints and rear yokes. Also make sure the bolts for your u-joints are not loose. With 145 k you will probably be fine. My 93' went 285 K with no u-joint change or maintenence and with heavy loads often.

is your truck 4 wheel drive?mine is clunking when i got from park to reverse or from park to drive. i took it to the dealership and they told me that is was some slack in my transfer case chain. they said that it would not cause any problems, but i still got my chain changed because i did not want it to break and mess up my gears in the transfer case.

I have a friend with a 99 Z71. Has had this problem several times. It actually turned out to be the front slip yoke on the differential. It has to be replaced every couple of years. Pretty common from what I hear. This truck is lift by a 3 inch body lift and 33" tires. Don't really know if that would account for anything.

There is a gap between the yoke and your tranny, way over tolerance. There have been some 150,000 cases so far----------BELOW ARE THE TSBs AND CARS AFFECTED BUY THE SAME THING YOU WENT THROUGH. GET GM COMPLAINT ON THE PHONE ASAP AND TELL THEM YOU WANT THE BS STOPPED AND YOUR SHAFT REPLACED - THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF IT EVEN IF YOUR DLRSHP WON'T. THEY WILL SEND YOU ELSEWHERE. You should never ever have to pay for this.
TSB Report Dates Reflect When GM Agrees There Is A Problem, Not Year of Truck and MOST CERTAINLY NOT when they Fixed the Problem!@!

RE: 99 silverado driveshaft

My truck has been doing this for years, now the transmission won't shift, could the clunk, bump or squawk noise when the vehicle comes to a stop or when accelerating from a complete stop that it has been doing have caused this. I took it to the dealer and they could not fix the clunking. Who do I need to call and what do I need to tell them to get the clunking fixed. I have a 99 Chevy Silverado K 1500 that is on the list.
