All Wheel Drive?

I am buying an all wheel drive RV that is built on a 2002 Astro Van. What is "all wheel drive" and does it experience any problems? Is it any good?

Thanks in advance,

Andy

The easiest way to describe it is a full time 4WD. Basically all 4 wheels get power all the time. They have their advantages in certain terrain, but like 4 wheel drive there will be a little more maintenance.

So it doesn't just kick in when the rear wheels start to slip?

Yes sorry I missed the 2002 model indication. I think it was in 1999 they switched to where the front wheels only get power when needed. Sorry for the confusion.

Do you know what causes the unit to go into 4WD? What has to happen in order for it to go into 4WD? I have a Silverado 4WD and usually put it in 4WD just before I need it. It seems to me if I start slipping on some snowy road and the unit then engages it might be to late. Just trying to understand the system.

Also, I was wondering if there is some way to add a switch or something to force it into 4WD and stay there until released?

Any help and info would be appreciated,

Andy
