I have a 99 gmc 1500, w/rear discs. Both the rear brakes are not releasing and get smoking hot. the truck seems to hop when going down the road. plenty of pad left. Any ideas guys? Thanks

 

as a mechanic ive seen this many times, you need to pull the caliper off the carrier to make sure the slide pics are free and working, and if they are then chances are its prolly a caliper but try and press the picton in and see if it goes in or not... it also has the ebrake on the in side of the drum which i have also seen stick... wont really know till u get in there...

 

Thanks snoeboardman137, i'm off work on sun. and will tear it down then. is the hex head nut on the inside of the caliper an 8 or 10 mm? anyway i'll need to buy a set before then. just seems weird that both calipers go at the same time. i bought the truck new and it has 78000 on it. chances are its prolly just the slide pins tho... if they are seized u can get a new carrier or use a torch on the housing where they slide in being careful not to get your rubbers and heat em and just use vice grips or something to try and break em free and then clean em up with a wire wheel and i put never seize on em before puttin em back in... as for the caliper i guess i dont know what your talkin bout... maybe im just reading it wrong? to press the caliper in i use a really big pair of channel locks i got from snap on but you can use a c clamp also...

 

definitely the slide pins - probably a bottom one.

 

If both are doing it I would bet it has something to do with the parking brake. Have you tried to hold your parking brake release handle out and pump the pedal a few times. They might be seizing up on you.

 

I think that you need to pull the caliper off the carrier so that are free . I feel due to this only you are facing the problem.
