Default Cams

We have talked about this before, but we have alot of new people here. I know nothing about cams, except they appear to give good power gains. I use my truck asa daily driver, mostly highway, and tow my boat. I am looking for max power, and still driveable and able to pull my boat up boat ramps. Any help would be great.

Since you tow - keep it "small" - somewhere around a 216/218 or a 218/220 with a 114 lsa will give you pretty good torque.

Given you're an extended cab I would order a Texas Speed 220/220 on a 114 lsa. You'll love it. You'll need a tune and if you upgrade your cam you need to replace the springs (Comp 918's or 921's) and 7.4" pushrods. Do it right the first time or you'll be spending more down the road to fix broken parts. I would just do the whole package from Texas Speed.

Glad to see other people have plenty of $$$$ to roll around in.

There was a guy doing a cam swap on a 5.3 a while back and he was keeping us posted up until actually getting it completed.... then he kinda just stopped.[&:] Maybe he never got it running again, LOL!

I wonder what happened with that guy. He was doing a god job on writeups then disappeared.

Yankee - Idon't know if itmakes a difference but my truck is crew cab not an extended cab, so there is more weight.

stopspazinout: Vortec heads on that motor would be a great upgrade, but you'll have to do some tweaking to get the most out of it. It will run better without tweaking but at higher rpms the engine might lean out cause of the increased airflow. A colder temp thermo will make a difference too.

Last summer when i was looking in to this i had a guy in texas that said what would be the best plans for my truck as a daily driver is this.

Comp 212/218 High lift version $350
comp 918 springs $100
chromolly 7.4" pushrods $150
And he would do the install with me buying everthng for around $275

THis is just what he recommended and sounded like a good price for a cam swap.

This was a guy in houston texas so i would have to drive about 8 hours but thats also where my custom tune is from so i could get updated at the same time.

220 would still be fine...a 212 or 216 might be even better though.

There's a good tuner in Arlington that would save you a lot of driving and give you a good deal on a cam package and the install.
