Camshaft questions, oh man.
Hey guys, here's what I have.
92 Chevy Silverado 4x4 non-z71 Engine Late model, not sure the year, have'nt ran the castings, 350 Roller block. Bored .060 stock style four valve relief pistons standard rods/stroke Not going for a racer or mud buggy or towing 8 horses. I want a little bit bigger than stock cam but I would like to know the benefits of using a roller cam. Are they worth the money? I want to use the stock heads,(from the 92 non roller 350), valves, valve springs pushrods etc. I ran up on what seems to be a decent deal on a roller cam, lifters, lifter guides and retainer for around $150, its a used cam but low miles. I have never used roller so Im not familiar with the pros and cons, any suggestions? thanks Dale Oh, also, will a Vortec cam work in a non Vortec block? Thanks again |
Roller set ups use less friction. They work better in higher RPM. I took a stock cam out of a 2000 LS1 motor. It gave me 23 pony's. I went from a .467 lift to a .500 lift. Slight lope but really increased power!!

Exactly what he said...go for it. |
Thanks for the advice guys. Here's another question for you. How much lift and duration @ .050 is too much for GM TB Injection without using a chip mod? Also what would be too much if a fella wanted to use stock valves, springs, locks and retainers? And lastly, whats too much for a stock stall in a 700R4/4L60E? I want this thing to run like a mutha when I am done. I plan to degree in the cam too so my valve timing is exact. Thanks again.

Honestly, IMO, your gonna be very limited with that intake and TB set up. Go carb and put a hot cam, stronger springs, and a 2800-3200 stall.

Thanks for the input. I am gonna toss those ideas around. I have been out of high performance applications for so long, I dont remember much about putting things together where the numbers work to make the most HP and Torque. Man why did I ever quit building? Thanks guys.
Last question, are Vortec parts interchangeable with older small blocks? Dale |
This can give you some ideas as to how much power ou can get...http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...ine/index.html
