can you explain "engine overheat protection"?

It's listed as standard equipment on my truck. How does it work? I've heard of a system that shuts down certain cylinders in overheat situations in order to help cool it down, is that what it has? I'm just trying to get to know the technical side of my truck.

thanks

Correct..if it gets too hot, she'll begin cancelling cylinders in a criss-cross order...I think it can be driven 50 miles under this condition
