Catalytic Converter, CA Regulation
 

Looking for a CA legal Catalytic converter for a 2000 silverado with a 5.3L V8. Got the reading 0420 on the OBD2 and shook the bank 1 cat which has a rattle internally. Im thinking I will just take them out and replace it all. Problem is, CA approved cats are 400-500 more expensive than the other 49 states.....ideas?

Why not go to another state and get a cheaper cat put in or do it yourself. Not sure why the rules in CA changed but in 02 or 03 my 91 chevy needed a new cat and the dealer service writed said I can get the GM cat for $900 or have the local muffler shop put one in for $250. Easy decision. Now in CA I'm told you can't get the after market cats.

there are a few different emissions for the 5.3L, so check your EFN to make sure it matches

if you want to save money, you can just get the universal for the one that is broke. cheaper that way. although if you want to do both, the catco direct fit is much less than magnaflow

Tmw. I would love to get a cheaper product from another state but the truth is, I need to smog it here in CA. Don't really knownifnit will smog if there is a non-compliant cat on there.

From my experience, yes Catco is a good brand.
haha (maybe not so haha), that said, apparently on Jan 10th, the ARB had a problem with nearly every aftermarket California supplier not meeting deadline requirements, and they at least temporarily pulled a lot of EO certifications, Catco among them. Without digging really deep, it looks like Catco is practically halted for the moment.

I think it is some reporting infraction, but not really sure yet what is going on

If you're in a rush, you might go with Magnaflow or a universal..?
