Changed Instrument Cluster - Odometer
 

I have a 1999 Z-71 that I just finished changing the instrument cluster. The old one worked fine but the new one I picked up has the transmission fuild temp and since I pull a big travel trailer I wanted to have that feature. The swap out went extremely quick and easy. The question I have is with the odometer. My truck has 103,000 miles but when I hooked up the new (used) odometer it now has 76,000. Is this something that the dealer can reprogram to be accurate?

not on a 99,no..

silverado's did not go to programmable clusters till 03

Argon correct me if I'm wrong,but I remember reading that the software for the air bag system is unique to the 1999 models and not compatible,the 2000-2002 are supposedly the same. According to what I read using a non 99 cluster would cause a Air Bag trouble code. Also there is a guy on E-bay out of Bristol Connecticut who repairs the odometer/gear selector blank displays up through 2002 models and the later ones stepper motor problems and offers a mileage correction,vin programming, and latest updateservice.

not sure on the airbag thing,but makes sense...99-02 clusters sre non-programmable in the sense they are not class 2 devces (like a pcm)...they do not set codes or can be (talked to" with a scanner.

however,an a/c delco electronics place (or guy) could go inside and change whats needed,or change the miles.

when we order a cluster for a 99,we have to tell he center the miles and they put it in for us.....on an 06,it comes in with 0 miles and we put the correct miles on it

Sounds like a serious concern with the airbag. Will it functiuon properly?

As far as the mileage goes, I'd just tell everyone your truck now has 76K on it. If you trade it in in the future you can pull one over on the dealer.

The "New" cluster is from a '99 also and so I do not think I need to worry about airbag issues. Thanks for the answers Argon.
