Default Changing oil this weekend ...

Royal Purple or Amsoil?

Also, any preference for a filter? ...and should I also get a magnet to put on the filter to prevent metal particles from reentering the engine?

I'm assuming that since I'm switching oil brand, I will need to do a flush, right?

Thanks!

What have you been running so far? Magnet is always a good idea as long as you take off the filter BEFORE you remove the magnet. If you have been using conventional oil, don't buy expensive synthetic as it will not benefit you as much as it would if you have used it since the engine was new. Part synthetic would work just fine. If you have used synthetic since new then use Mobil1. I know people who use Royal Purple but they are using it in 400hp plus modified engines, Im not sure if it is beneficial in slightly modified or stock vehicles.

My brother had the truck before I bought it from him ...he used whatever was on sale. I put in Mobil1 on the only change I had to do since I had the truck. Had it since June - my commute to work is 7 miles. The truck has 38K miles.

I run amsoil in every vehicle I have. I have never used Royal Purple products. There is a "Jiffy lube" type station near me that does an Amsoil oil change for $40.(I know, you are in California). Amsoil - shop around before you buy, stores in my area vary as much as $2 per quart. You should be able to buy a magnetic drain plug at any auto parts store.
Do not use Quakerstate or Penzoil....they have a high wax content that can build in your system.

What is Amsoil? Never heard of it. I agree with Cracker about the Quakerstate and Penzoil.

I agree with that article that AMSOIL posted on their sight, but it doesn't mention that @ 25,000 miles the fluid might not be worn down but it is dirty as all hell especially going off road and that can clog up the works over time too. Dirt and debris like little pieces of metal and rubber from the engine will hold heat and will scratch and clog things up in the engine, the filter will only grab so much of this stuff and it will not get the real smalll particles out that cause the oil to discolor and hold heat. Their oil any good? Seems to be, but I'll never go anywhere near 25K miles on oil for the reasons I mentioned.

I called a few places and couldn't find a local dealer w/ Amsoil ...so I went with Royal Purple. We will see how it goes.

Next weekend, I should have time to lube the chasis ....hopefully I'll have some time before then to locate all of the zerks.

Castrol Syntec, Mobil 1, Royal Purple, and Amsoil are all great synthetic oils. Dont buy the kind that says it will last 15,000 miles unless you change it a little more often than that. You dont have to run synthetic from the first day you buy the truck. You can switch from conventional to synthetic, just dont switch back.
