Are chrome rims suppose to chip?

The previous owner of my 2000 chevy took chrome rims onto it and i have no idea wat he did with them cause there is some black stuff all over it and its like baked on... so in some spots on the rim the chrome is like chipping off, does this mean there fake or something?

RE: Are chrome rims suppose to chip?

Well all chrome rims are not actually made of chrome. It's way too soft. The usually now a days take an aluminum rim and chrome plate them. If they take some hard dings or cuts I can see how they might chip. But all of the rim making companies do it a little bit differently.... I mean some are just cheap and some seem indestructable.

RE: Are chrome rims suppose to chip?

My 1990 1500 came with the optional Scottsdale Package. In this package came Chevrolet aluminum wheels. What a joke. Aluminum doesn't rust right? Well, these rims tarnished beyond hope. I dumped them for regular painted steel wheels 12 years ago. And they still look nice.

Chrome rims. You probably have brake dust on them imbedded with road grime. Should polish up nice except that the fake/real chrome sprayed onto some obscure metal compound is now chipped and tarnished and probably cannot be fixed unless you take the rims and have them refinished with chrome plating.

Cheaper to buy new rims.
