Computer/Electrical Problems
 

Ok, I have a problem. My 94 Chevy quit me. It was running fine but had a miss once in a while. I drove it 200mi to Tulsa and it died at the airport. I changed the plugs wires fuel filter and I think its a regulator of sorts in the side of the throtle body. It will run now but it won't idle and won't rev up over 1900rpm's. its not a cloged catalatic converter, or fuel pump. My bro-n-law had a chevy tech put it on a hand held diognostic, and the dude says it needs a computer and a few sensors put in it to fix it, like 1500-2000$. I have a hard time beliving this. I am not going to spend this much money in this way on a truck with 170k miles on it. So what are my options here, what would it take to change it over to a carb, and get rid of all the emissions and computer crap? It is a 350, it still has good power, dosen't smoke or leak a drop of anything. It's still a good truck, but if I'm gonna spend this kind od cash, I'll turn it into a toy..

Best bet would be to get the actual codes from you buddy's diagnostic code reader and look up the actual codes yourself. Then scan the internet for related issues and try and troubleshoot it. Buying a GM manual won't hurt either if you plan on keeping the truck for a while. Buy sensors online, shop for the best prices. If you need a ECM/PCM, go to a bone yard or find someone parting out the same truck. You don't need a brand new $200-500 computer. You can get a used on for $50-100.

If you do it right you can be on the road again for a fraction of the price of what your buddy quoted you. It sounds to me like your truck needs a tune up and a few sensors replaced. (o2, plugs, wires, maybe tps, etc...)

Don't go with a carb! Gas prices are going to keep climbing and you'll never be able to afford gas in the damn thing if you go with a carb.

if it won't rev over 1900,its got a problem that a sensor or carb ain't gonna repair.

you say its not a fuel pump..how do yanno?..whats the fuel pressure?
