Crazy Fuel Gauge

I have a 2000 Sierra 2500. When the truck is fueled, the fuel gauge reads empty and the message center tells me so. The only way to get a reading is to put the gear selector into all 4 forward gears, then pause in reverse and return to park or drive. After the tank level drops to below the F mark, life's good and it operates fine. When the fuel pump failed, the sending unit was replaced with it. The craziness continues. Does anyone have a clue as to what this is about?

That might be a good idea. This truck has more demons than Bayer's got aspirins!
