Descreened MAF

Just a quick question. My buddy has a 2001 Chevy with the 5.3. He descreened his MAS and said it hurt his gas mileage. So he gave it to me. The numbersmach my MAS so that is not a problem. Before I install it I was wondering if it will hurt my gas mileage, increase it, or just make it more responsive? I wonder if it was his driving, but he had it descreened for about 2 months and said itcut hismiles per tank roughly 30 miles shorter of what he normally gets. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I would hate to loose MPG especailly at this time of the gas inflation....

RE: Descreened MAF

He probably lost gas mileage b/c of his right foot. Descreening improves throttle response and we all know what happens when we have more throttle response...

RE: Descreened MAF

One more question before I install the descreened MAF...
What do I clean the sensors with?
What kind of cleaner?
Can you get it at an autoparts dealer or do you have to go to a computer electronics store?
And then do you wipe it down or just let it dry naturally?
I figure I better clean it before I install it right? ;)

Why don't you just descreen the one that's on your truck now? It only takes about 10 minutes.

I figured why tear mine apart if I have one already done. That way if I am not happy I can always just put mine back on with the screen still intact.

To clean your MAF they make a MAF sensor cleaner. you can get it at any auto parts store. it is made to dry fast, it only takes seconds to dry. make sure not to have it hooked up when you clean it, just a heads up. i think it works good, i cleaned mine and if i drive 60 or so i can get 18-20 mpgeverytime. also have a k&n air filter

alright so i was over at the FSC forum and all the guys there say that descreening your MAF sensor is very bad.the screensupposedly smooths out the air coming in and can screw things up if you remove it.

anybody here had any problems with it once its been removed? i did mine about a month ago and havent noticed any problems. i still get about the same mpg, no pinging, no check engine lights, weird idle, nothing. even with my new tune so far everything is acting ok.

just curious.

I did mine about 3 weeks ago and I haven't noticed any problems. Then again I traded that truck in a week and a half ago!! :D
