Driving on the beach

I have been driving on the beach a little with my 89 gmc 1500 4wd takes a while to engage. Sometimes i will have to drive around for a mile or so before it goes. It seems to get into 4 low easier. I think it is running a bit dry maybe but do not know much about automatic hub 4x4's Is there a way for me to lube this baby up?

Check your drivetrain fluids and vaccuum lines. The only way (that I know of ) to keep the hubs in check is to engage and disengage the four wheel drive a few times every month to keep the grease from settling. I did this on my 91 when I first got it and after awhile they lossened up a bit and engaged a little faster.

RE: Driving on the beach

Do you know how to check the transfer case and front axle fluids? There is a bolt bout half way up on the back side of the transfer case that I think is like 15 mm maybe? Take it out and stick your finger in there. You should hit fluid. If not you might need some but I'd find out how much it takes first. Make sure it looks red and somewhat clean. It might need changed. Same with the front axle. That plug is like a 11mm I think, half way up the differential. Its on the drivers side and you would use the same technique to check it. I know for sure that the front differential needs to be within finger reach level of the plug hole. Fluid will be brownish like oil but thicker. Hope that helps.
